Can Prosopagnosia Be Treated? What Training Can and Can't Do

"Can prosopagnosia be cured through training?" Current research doesn't offer a clear yes to that question. Research into cognitive training and brain plasticity is ongoing, but the size and durability of any benefit have been reported as limited. The first step is understanding where things actually stand, without overpromising.

There's No "Magic Bullet" Yet for Developmental Prosopagnosia

For developmental prosopagnosia, no method — whether a specific medication or a surgical procedure — has been established at this point that cures the underlying difficulty with face recognition. This is because developmental prosopagnosia isn't linked to a single identifiable cause, the way a brain illness or injury might be; it's thought instead to relate to how the brain's face-processing network functions and develops, and not all of that mechanism has been worked out.

It's more accurate to say not that "there's no treatment," but that "an established treatment that fundamentally cures the condition remains at the research stage." Future research could change this picture, but at present, no method exists that can promise a definitive cure.

In Acquired Cases, Addressing the Underlying Cause Can Sometimes Bring Improvement

The picture is somewhat different for acquired prosopagnosia, which arises following an event such as a stroke or head injury. When the underlying brain lesion involves reversible factors — swelling or compression in the acute phase, for instance — partial improvement in face-recognition difficulty has been reported to occur over time, alongside treatment of the underlying condition. That said, this is less a treatment targeting prosopagnosia itself than an improvement that follows from medical care addressing the underlying brain illness or injury, and it doesn't mean every case of acquired prosopagnosia improves the same way.

Cognitive Training Research Is Advancing, but Its Effects Remain Limited

Research on face-recognition training broadly splits into two approaches: "holistic processing training," which aims to strengthen the ability to perceive a face as a whole all at once — the arrangement of eyes, nose, and mouth — and "compensatory training," which practices making effective use of cues other than the face, such as voice or build. Studies of holistic processing training have reported some improvement in identifying the specific faces used in training, but the degree to which that benefit generalizes — carries over to new faces not used in training — has been reported as limited.

Training in compensatory strategies has been reported to have some practical value as a coping method in daily life, but this practices how to use non-facial information rather than raising face-recognition ability itself. Both lines of research face limitations — small numbers of participants, and few studies tracking whether effects persist over the long term — and systematic reviews have concluded that it isn't yet possible to say definitively which training method reliably works.

How to Read Reports of "It Worked"

Even when an individual study reports "improvement," this often comes with caveats — a small effect size, limited transfer beyond the trained task, the need for prolonged practice, or an unclear picture of how long any benefit lasts. Be careful not to conclude that a condition is "cured" based on a single study's results.

Brain-Plasticity Research and a Balanced View of the Future

The brain's capacity to change how it functions through experience is known as "plasticity," and research continues into whether the face-processing network's activity can be changed through training or experience. This kind of research matters as a way of exploring potential leads for future rehabilitation, but much of it remains at the basic-research or early clinical stage, and it hasn't been established as a method that reliably resolves everyday difficulty.

The fact that research is progressing is itself a positive sign, but "research is progressing" and "a treatment is established" are two different things. For now, rather than waiting for a fundamental cure, a more realistic option is to keep living well by combining the kinds of strategies covered elsewhere in this series — leaning on cues other than the face — with adjustments to your surrounding environment.

Facing This Honestly

When you come across confident claims that "training cures it," it's worth checking what research the claim is based on, whether it concerns developmental or acquired cases, and how the scope and durability of any benefit were actually reported. Information that raises expectations too high can lead to real disappointment and self-blame when it doesn't pan out.

What can honestly be said at this point comes down to three things: no fundamental treatment has been established; in acquired cases, addressing the underlying cause can sometimes bring improvement; and research into cognitive training continues, but its benefits remain limited, with real challenges in generalizing to everyday life. If this concerns you, it's worth consulting a specialist institution that offers proper evaluation and testing, rather than trying a training method on your own based on self-judgment.
